Looking to take your customers from Windows XP or Vista to Windows 7? Microsoft is pulling the curtain back on several transition and migration tools for IT pros and developers. Here’s the scoop.
According to Microsoft’s official Windows Team Blog, the tools include:
“the upcoming release of the Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 (RDC7) client for Windows XP and Windows Vista. RDC7 will allow users who connect to machines running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 from Windows XP or Windows Vista to take advantage of features such as Windows Media Player redirection and true multi-monitor support. The release candidate for the Windows Management Framework is also available. This is a collection of tools to help IT Professionals manage a mixed environment of Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP PCs…”
Who’s Buying?
So far, so good. But will customers demand Windows 7? And will VARs promote the operating system?
There’s plenty of skepticism from the open source and Apple camps (surprise, surprise). And a growing list of folks are betting on virtual desktops rather than full-blown PC migrations.
Still, , The VAR Guy thinks Windows 7 will be a surprise hit — generating respectable sales at first (late 2009) followed by growing momentum throughout 2009.
