Pop quiz for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8, Surface Pro and Surface RT initiatives: What is the fastest path to potential success? The VAR Guy’s answer: Instead of attacking the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone and iPad markets, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) should muster all of its mobile forces against Google Android. Immediately. Here’s why.

As Hockey Great Wayne Gretzky once said, “I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.” And in the case of the mobile market, the puck is heading in Android’s direction — not Apple’s. Plus, Android customers may be less loyal that Apple’s fanatical mobile customers, The VAR Guy believes.

The evidence:

Now, consider the Apple and Google fan base.

  • Apple’s customers tend to be fanatically loyal.

  • Google Android users, generally speaking, tend to be a bit frustrated with software bugs, iffy product designs, and other problems that crop up when multiple hardware companies try to tweak a common software platform.

With all those bullets in mind, The VAR Guy sends his latest memo to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer: Apple is not your big long-term problem nor is it your big long-term opportunity. The real threat and opportunity is Android. Get after it.
