MapR and Hadapt Simplify Hadoop Data Analytics
You’ve heard of Hadoop, but what about Hadapt? The latter name may sound obscure, but it’s set to gain a larger profile in the wake of the announcement this week of a partnership between Hadoop vendor MapR and Hadapt, which develops a data analytics platform. Here are the details, and what they mean for Big Data.
Hadapt is a young company founded by a trio of computer scientists and business students from Yale. It raised its first major round of funding, of $9.5 million, in 2011, and has continued to receive investments in the millions since.
Hadapt’s primary focus is on integrating SQL databases with the Hadoop Big Data platform. The company’s main product, called Adaptive Analytical Platform, makes it possible to analyze data stored on Hadoop using SQL queries. Unlike similar solutions that use wrappers to allow Hadoop queries from other protocols, the company is eager to emphasize that its technology stands out because it:
… uses Hadoop as the parallelization layer for its query processing, with each node’s structured and unstructured data stored in a RDBMS and in HDFS, respectively. Consolidating data into a single platform drastically reduces TCO, eliminates data silos, and allows for richer analytics through consumption of diverse data types.
MapR Partnership
On Nov. 13, 2012, Hadapt announced a partnership with MapR, which develops value-added implementations of the open source Hadoop platform. The deal integrates Hadapt’s interactive query features into MapR’s Hadoop distribution to provide a more robust Big Data platform for the enterprise.
The agreement follows other recent developments at MapR involving an expanded partner network and new Hadoop features to improve the consistency and reliability of Big Data. Taken together, these developments highlight the continuing demand for simplified Big Data solutions that allow administrators to take advantage of the power of Hadoop without having to learn all of the complexities of the rapidly evolving platform itself.
In fact, the Hadapt deal in many ways reflects an attempt by Mapr and Hadapt to provide customers with a way to analyze Hadoop data without having to understand Hadoop at all. By integrating Hadapt’s analytics solution into one of the channel’s leading Hadoop distributions, the partnership stands to make Hadoop adoption easier by allowing organizations to confront Big Data challenges using the skills and resources they already have, rather than investing in new ones.
