GFI Software, which has been reaching out to MSPs over the past year or two, is launching a new product aimed at giving SMBs “comprehensive backup, restore and synchronization for all files across the network.” Here are the details.

It’s called GFI Backup 2010 Business Edition. The new solution has been tailored for IT admins looking to create a backup/restore task that’s applicable across an entire company’s network. Time saved, is what GFI is boasting, since you can apply and configure multiple tasks and maintain the backup across the whole network without annoying end-point specific edits.

Backup 2010 is focused on this easy of use and centralizing of all operations, including status monitoring too. And it’s all accessible via a web-based console.

Backup 2010 uses a standard Zip64 file format (when instructed) to archive data, allowing for quick access to compressed data, if it gets opened on a different computer than the one it was backed-up from. No proprietary formats to worry about.

Plus, Backup 2010 supports NAS, LAN backup, external drives, tape drives, and FTP. There’s Military-strength 256-bit AES strong encryption and support for HTTPS. You can do your admin tweaks with it via Active Directory or Workgroup and users can even be given the ability to backup and sync what they want across multiple machines.

Of course, the backup market is increasingly crowded. And frankly, we expect some sort of market shakeout over the next year or two as VARs and MSPs begin to choose sides amid all the vendor competition. We’ll be watching to see how GFI navigates the forthcoming shakeout.
