Symantec Bringing Backup Exec To The Cloud
It’s been a long time coming. Symantec later this year will finally bring Backup Exec to the cloud, enabling SMBs to move backups off of tape and into Symantec’s cloud. Details are still somewhat scarce, but we’re curious to see if the well-known Backup Exec brand finds new momentum out in the cloud.
According to the press release, the pitch is simple: Symantec Backup Exec.cloud is for small organizations looking to offload their IT infrastructure. Backups are automatic according to schedule or whenever a file change is detected. Disaster recovery is supposed to be just as easy — and employees, Symantec says, can retrieve individual files from their cloud storage.
As for pricing, Symantec Backup Exec.cloud is looking for a predictable scheme that keeps enterprises from guessing. And another major value of this cloud backup solution, they say, is that it’s going to integrate with other Symantec SaaS offerings like data protection and e-mail encryption, all of which are now branded under the “.cloud” moniker.
Still, there are numerous cloud backup and recovery services out there. And many of those cloud services are designed purely for the cloud. Talkin’ Cloud will be watching to see how Symantec will promote Backup Exec.cloud to SMB channel partners.
