At Citrix Synergy this week, Zenoss, a provider of management software for physical, virtual and cloud-based IT infrastructures, announced its open source ZenPack now has monitoring and correlation capabilities for virtual machines (VMs) running on Citrix (NASDAQ: CTXS) CloudStack, providing a more unified view of the CloudStack infrastructure.

There is an “underlying core” of VMs that are essential to CloudStack operation; Zenoss claims its ZenPack customers now have a deeper understanding of the functioning of these systems, as well as their correlation with other devices in the infrastructure, providing a more “unified” view of CloudStack.

In a prepared statement Chet Luther, principal engineer and architect of the CloudStack ZenPack, said: “Last month, CloudStack became the first cloud platform in the industry to be submitted to the Apache Software Foundation, with a mission of delivering a powerful, proven, hypervisor-agnostic platform that helps customers of all sizes build robust clouds. Zenoss aims to support this mission by working with our commercial and open source customers to continue enhancing our CloudStack ZenPack and providing a powerful unified monitoring solution for CloudStack deployments.”

A quick note on Zenoss: according to its press release more than 35,000 organizations worldwide are using Zenoss for managing networks, servers, storage and cloud infrastructure. Notable customers include Rackspace (NYSE: RAX), VMware (NYSE: VMW), Hosting.com, LinkedIn (NYSE: LNKD), Motorola (NYSE: MSI) and SunGard. In September 2011 Zenoss released the OpenStack edition of ZenPack. With the new announcement, Zenoss now provides offerings for the two most prominent open source cloud ecosystems.

This week Talkin’ Cloud reported that a substantial 85 percent of Citrix Systems’ VARs see an opportunity to build private clouds using CloudStack, a statistic that came from the Citrix Partner Summit 2012. Citrix appears to have its mojo working — in April we shared that more than 35 percent of cloud services providers are working with Citrix, according to preliminary results from our second annual Talkin’ Cloud 50 Survey.
