Sanbolic Releases Storage-Agnostic Software-Defined Storage Platform

Sanbolic's newest storage offering integrates legacy and scale-out storage from local servers and the cloud into a centralized environment.

Sanbolic has unveiled a new contender in the software-defined storage (SDS) market. Compatible with a range of operating systems, virtualization and cloud platforms, the product aims to integrate legacy and scale-out storage infrastuctures into a single resource.

Sanbolic's new storage platform, which supports Microsoft (MSFT) Windows, Linux, Xen, KVM, Hyper-V and OpenStack, allows enterprises to manage all of their data—whether it is hosted locally or in the cloud, and whether it lives on traditional storage infrastructure or on scale-out nodes—from a single location. In so doing, it "offers storage-agnostic management, optimization and dynamic block and file scale-out across all leading on-premise and cloud storage vendors (EMC, NetApp, Hitachi Data Systems, Amazon Web Services), including commodity storage, to ensure the fluid availability and responsiveness of enterprise data and mission-critical applications as business needs grow and change," according to the company.

The offering is only one of what is now quite a wide array of SDS storage solutions, but Sanbolic hopes to set itself apart from the crowd through its ability to handle many different types of data stores across a variety of physical, virtual and cloud platforms. "We're giving enterprises a simplified way to manage their entire data center operations in a centralized platform, regardless of how geographically distributed or siloed their current IT infrastructure may be," said Momchil Michailov, Sanbolic CEO, in a statement.

Sanbolic, which was founded more than 13 years ago, counts about "hundreds" of medium and large enterprises across the world as customers, according to data from the company. Among them are Canon, GE, Lockheed Martin, United States Navy and Verizon Wireless.
