Envista Licenses Google Map Engine for IRIS Cloud PaaS Apps

Envista has reached an agreement with Google to license its Google Maps Engine for location-aware apps on its IRIS PaaS.

Envista is licensing the Google Maps Engine for IRIS, the company's cloud-based PaaS designed to enable organizations to quickly configure location-aware web apps without the need for special training. Using Google Maps Engine, Envista will give IRIS users the ability to process, organize and manage location data using Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG) cloud infrastructure.

Google's geo cloud platform will present IRIS users with data visualized on a Google Map, which they can then distribute to to stakeholders at scale. According to Envista, the end goal is to help customers leverage existing data investments with a presentation that makes them actionable. It will give end users the ability to share critical location-based information to reduce risk, increase productivity and gain additional insight into data for improved decision-making, the company stated.

It's an interesting application of the technology behind Google Maps. Future IRIS apps will incorporate the Google Maps user interface so they're easy to use and familiar to end users. Well, when there's a perfectly good wheel next door, there's no point in reinventing it, is there?

Additionally, Envista noted there's a strong security element to Google Maps Engine that IRIS users will enjoy the benefits of. The Google technology allows geo data to be published and shared internally or externally in a secure manner.

Envista is positioning IRIS as the first Google-powered PaaS.

"A key benefit of implementing Google Maps Engine is the ability to provide IRIS users with real-time access to their data layers, leveraging a map tool that people are already familiar with," said Tarun Bhatnagar, director of Google Geo Enterprise, in a prepared statement.

Additionally, Mark Prestipino, Envista CEO, noted in a prepared statement that the technology will help customers to quickly and affordably use existing data stores to quickly configure apps.
