HP Launches SDN App Store

Seeing a definite future in software-defined networking (SDN), Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced the launch of the HP SDN App Store to provide its partners with a go-to-market platform and consulting and support services.

The SDN App Store is the first enterprise-grade app ecosystem on the market, according to HP, and is designed to help partners to create solution-driven applications for their customers using technology from both HP and independent software vendors (ISVs).

“Our customers are eager to transform their network architecture into a competitive advantage, and SDN applications make that possible,” said Antonio Neri, senior vice president and general manager, Servers and Networking at HP, in a statement. “With the HP SDN App Store, we have completed the final piece of the SDN ecosystem by offering a vibrant, robust marketplace of innovations that supports more than 5 million users and provides support to customers as they migrate to SDN.”

HP is breaking the app store down into four categories to help customers find apps most suited to their needs:

  • HP Circle: Applications built and tested exclusively by HP;

  • Premium Circle: Top sellers and programs that have been tested by HP and its partners;

  • Partner Circle: Apps self-tested by HP partners and reviewed by HP; and

  • Community Circle: Open-access and community-supported apps to demonstrate open source and concept SDN applications.

The app store is expected to launch Oct. 1 with eight initial applications, including two developed by HP—the HP Network Protector and HP Network Optimizer for Microsoft Lync. Partner apps include BlueCat DNS Director, Ecode evolve SDN orchestrator and the KEMP Adaptive Load Balancer. HP’s Trusted SDN Security Deployment will be available to help customers integrate, deploy and support multiple SDN security apps on their networks.

Channel partners will play an integral end-to-end role in supporting customers on the transition to SDN, according to HP, which is offering a discount code to the app store for companies working with partners to apply SDN applications to their environment. HP will also be demonstrating the app store during Interop New York 2014 this week.
