Clock is Ticking: Entry Period for 2017 MSPmentor 501 Ends May 1

With a month to go, we decided this was an opportune time to offer a quick update on this year’s installment and answer a few frequently asked questions.

Managed service providers (MSPs) that submitted surveys during the first month of the entry period for the 2017 MSPmentor 501 List and Rankings saw revenue from managed services increase an average of 4.8 percent last year compared to the year before, while income from resell activities fell 18.9 percent.

With a month to go before the May 1 deadline for entries, we here at MSPmentor and our partners at Clarity Channel Advisors thought this an opportune time to offer a quick update on how this year’s installment is coming along, and answer a few frequently asked questions.

The early findings – so far – point to a fairly dramatic acceleration in average growth among participants.

Companies that made the 2016 MSPmentor 501 list showed an average year over year growth rate of about 72 percent from 2014 to 2015.

This year’s list is showing average growth of 136 percent from 2015 to 2016.

Our analysis thus far has hardly been thorough, so it’s impossible to tell whether the findings will hold up, whether characteristics of the early submitters somehow skew the results, or whether this random group is just not representative for some other reason.

Also, last year’s results showed a significant gulf between high-performing and lower-performing companies, with many MSPs showing soaring revenue gains, while others endured sharp losses.

As a result, its tough to discern too much from averages.

We look forward to richer analyses once the full volume of submissions is available.

Now to a few FAQs:

1. Can I get a copy of our survey from last year?

This has been our most common inquiry so far this year.

Regrettably, we are unable to provide you with a copy of your submissions from last year.

During planning meetings, we considered whether it made sense to make these available. But after reviewing our process for digging out individual survey entries and transmitting them – which is not automated – we determined it would be too resource intensive.

We apologize for the inconvenience and we’ll continue to review how to efficiently make these available in the future.

2. Some of your regional MSP lists didn’t appear last year. What happened?

Indeed, we experienced some growing pains as we moved to make the MSPmentor 501 more transparent and reflective of the actual state of the IT services provider industry.

The new requirement for financial verification made our list and rankings the most accurate in the history of the industry, but also impacted the volume of submissions from certain parts of the world.

We look forward to blowing out this year’s results with the full spectrum of regional lists for which we’ve been known in the past.

3. I downloaded and filled out the PDF version of the survey. Where do I send it?

This is another all-too-common inquiry.

We hate that you went through all the trouble of filling out the hard copy, but all surveys must be submitted using the digital portal at

The downloadable PDF is there for convenient portability and reference.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience that may have caused.

Remember, you have until midnight U.S. Eastern Standard Time on May 1, 2017 to submit your entry.
