Puppet Labs says the acquisition of Cloudsmith will accelerate time to automation.

IT automation software provider Puppet Labs has acquired Cloudsmith, a provider of development tools for building and testing infrastructure automation. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Puppet Labs said Cloudsmith's technology will help manage the flow of changes in complex IT environments. Puppet Labs said it plans to combine both companies' technologies to increase productivity and accelerate time to automation, which it believes will improve  the customer experience. , to assist the managing the flow of changes in complex IT environments

Puppet Labs Vice President Scott Johnson told Talkin' Cloud that Cloudsmith previously developed an integrated development environment (IDE) called Geppetto for building and publishing Puppet modules. The module will help Puppet Labs become a better integrator by furthering automation, he said.

Cloudsmith also developed Stack Hammer, a service for integrating, testing and deploying collections of Puppet modules as complete stacks through integrations with GitHub and Amazon EC2. Both oth Geppetto and Stack Hammer will continue to be developed and supported, and all Cloudsmith employees will be retained and integrated into Puppet Labs.

Former Cloudsmith CEO Mitch Sonies will be taking on a new role at Puppet Labs as the company's vice president of business development.

Johnson said Puppet Labs has expanded its sales strategy to the channel, with more than 30 percent of the company's business outside of the United States through partners in the European Union and Australia.

He also said that the company has grown out deployments, reaching out to system integrators (SIs) and value-added resellers (VARs), too.
