Equinix (NASDAD: EQIX) and NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) are hoping to give customers more abilities to balance their private and public cloud resources while also retaining complete control of their data. The companies jointly announced the availability of NetApp Private Storage for Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers.
The cloud-based solution was designed to allow organizations to take advantage of on-demand cloud compute services and retain control of their data, which is secured on a private NetApp storage array. The goal is to give organizations the ability to leverage the features and capabilities in any of Equinix's AWS Direct Connect locations around the world.
Additionally, there's a compliance element to this. When the new solution is deployed on Platform Equinix, it provides balance between private and public cloud resources while maintaining the frequently stringest requirements of compliance regulations.
"Our partnership with Equinix puts NetApp in the perfect position to give businesses control over a highly flexible mix of on-premise and cloud resources," said Jon Mellon, vice president and general manager of Americas telcos/service providers at NetApp, in a prepared statement. "We believe this offering is truly a unique opportunity for enterprises to increase agility and reduce cost by using hybrid resources to optimize business outcomes."
A year ago, Equinix announced enterprise cloud storage provider Nirvanix was up and running with direct connections to Equinix IBX data centers from Nirvanix's Cloud Storage Network. The company has continued to grow in that time, and the connections between NetApp and Equinix are a good follow-up to the Nirvanix connections made last March.
NetApp Private Storage for AWS has been deployed, tested and validated in Equinix Solution Validations Centers in Silicon Valley and Ashburn, Va. For Equinix customers, demo platforms will be available for testing and validation in Singapore, Silicon Valley and Ashburn.
The partnership with NetApp is intended to take down the barriers to cloud service adoption and "help both cloud consumers and cloud service providers accelerate business and maximize revenue streams," said Greg Adgate, general manager of global alliances and partnerships at Equinix, in a prepared statement.
