The two vendors have partnered with the idea of delivering a cloud-based telepresence offering that combines Vidyo’s HD video and telepresence products with Mitel’s unified communications and collaboration portfolio. Together, they are hoping to bring “personal telepresence” to their customers.
The overall cloud-based telepresence solution, once completed, will tightly integrate Vidyo HD video with Mitel UCC. Since both companies are software-focused rather than hardware-focused, they expect the end result to be a highly flexible telepresence offering ideal for public, private and hybrid cloud deployments.
"After shipping two generations of scalable and cost-effective systems that can scale personal telepresence from legacy room system to mobile and desktop, we are focused on making our best-in-class conferencing infrastructure even more accessible to end users," said Ofer Shapiro, co-founder and CEO of Vidyo, in a prepared statement.
A collaboration with Mitel to push the end user customer base and a greater focus on the cloud seems to be the answer. Not that Vidyo is a stranger to the cloud, mind you. The vendor has an enterprise cloud videoconferencing offering that was designed to scale to thousands of endpoints while optimizing WAN bandwidth utilization through the localization of traffic on a distributed network.
For the channel, this might prove to be an interesting opportunity. Every aspect of cloud is growing, and UCC and telepresence are no different. And both Mitel and Vidyo at least partly rely on channel partners to take their solutions to market. How this exactly will go to market through one or both of those channel ecosystems is unknown, but you’d think there will at least be some resale opportunities forthcoming.
UCC and telepresence are playing a role in improving business workflow, and the cloud is increasingly proving to be an enabler in that respect.
