OpenStack Havana Launches With 400 New Features

Today's the day that OpenStack Havana is released to the market. The popular open source cloud software has gained 400 new features to support software development, managing data and application infrastructure at scale.

The OpenStack Foundation announced the general availability of the eighth release of OpenStack. The latest version, dubbed Havana, has 400 new features that were included to support software development, managing data and application infrastructure at scale.

According to OpenStack, new features such as OpenStack Metering and Orchestration, as well as enhancements to existing features such as global clusters for Object Storage and QoS for Block Storage, makes Havana good for organizations building and deploying apps with OpenStack clouds.

"If software development, managing data or running application infrastructure is strategic to your business, OpenStack is the platform that will accelerate time to value," said Jonathan Bryce, executive director of the OpenStack Foundation, in a prepared statement. "We've seen more users contribute directly to the Havana release than ever before. It means users are empowered and driving the direction of OpenStack based on their real world use cases and implementations."

A few of the new features the OpenStack Foundation is touting include:

  • Application-driven capabilities: OpenStack Orchestration was included in the Havana release and is a template-driven service for describing and automating the deployment of compute, storage and networking resources for an application. The new global clusters feature for Object Storage drives lower costs and improved performance by replicating and delivering data. And the new QoS capability for Block Storage drivers is meant to guarantee performance requirements for applications. To speed application deployment using containers, docker support was also included.
  • Improved operational experience: According to the OpenStack Foundation, community members put in significant effort to increase the breadth of functionality exposed through the OpenStack Dashboard. There have also been enhancements to the UI, workflows and productivity. The new OpenStack Metering feature was designed to provide users with a single source of usage data across OpenStack services.
  • Additional enterprise-focused features: Some of the enterprise features in Havana include end-to-end encryption across all Block Storage drivers, SSL support across all service APIs, new VPN and firewall-as-a-service capabilities, support for rolling upgrades and boot from volume.
