Rackspace Cloud Monitoring Adds Server Monitoring, Graphs, More

Rackspace Hosting (NYSE: RAX) has recently unveiled expanded server monitoring capabilities and an enhanced console for Rackspace Cloud Monitoring.

Rackspace Hosting (NYSE: RAX) has unveiled expanded the capabilities of its Rackspace Cloud Monitoring service to help developers and system administrators with deeper visibility into performance and stability of hybrid cloud infrastructures and applications. Here are the key key points.

Rackspace Cloud Monitoring users will see their server monitoring capabilities expanded with the new capabilities, according to Rackspace, which is opening up monitoring to any server with with a public Internet connection, regarless of where the server is housed. Rackspace Product Manager Russell Haering provided the details in a recent company blog post.

"Server monitoring can be enabled by installing the cloud monitoring agent, which allows you to create checks on load average, CPU, memory, filesystem and network usage, as well as more advanced checks (currently available via the API only) including a custom plugin check that uses a user-supplied check to gather any metrics you like," Haering wrote.

Rackspace Cloud Monitoring also includes the following updates:

  • Graph functionality -- view server monitoring data in the open cloud control panel;
  • Multi-data center redundancy -- maintain access to data in the infrastructure, even when one data center goes down, due to data centers being separated geographically; and
  • Small memory footprint and enhance security -- leverage the company's small memory footprint for smaller machines and protect company data with TLS for all connections and a private Certificate Authority (CA) used by the agent.

The agent is an Apache 2.0 licensed open source project to provide a way to audit code and compile the agent for your own distribution.

The server monitoring feature is free to use until July 31, 2013.
