We’re expecting plenty of news from this week’s VMworld conference (Aug. 29-Sept. 1, Las Vegas). Among the first thing we’ve heard: VMTurbo, which develops virtualization management software, has launched an appliance update that seeks to improve Application Performance Management. Here are the potential implications for virtualization VARs.

Refresher: VMTurbo offers VMTurbo Community Edition as a free package to anyone looking for basic VM monitoring tools. Recently, N. Louis Shipley, formerly GM of Citrix Systems, joined VMTurbo as CEO.

Now, VMTurbo is delivering an Application Performance Management (APM) upgrade. It helps VARs and channel partners to spot enterprise application issues that may be chewing up infrastructure overhead. The VMTurbo upgrade can determine where apps should live (“workload placement”) and subsequently improve performance, the company claims. Bonus? The VMTurbo appliance can automatically detect the applications and prioritize their load based on IT policy and specific application needs, VMTurbo claims.

Pricing starts at $200 per socket, or $25 per virtual machine. VMTurbo Application Performance Management will initially only support “popular Windows applications [like] SQL server and IIS.” But VMTurbo’s road map has a course plotted for expanded app support through APM in the very near future.
