Google: 850,000 New Android Activations Every Day

It was only two months ago that TalkinCloud reported huge strides in Google Android’s mobile momentum. Yesterday, Google SVP of Mobile and Digital Content Andy Rubin took to the Google Mobile blog to announce that the little (mostly) open source operating system that could is experiencing 250 percent year-over-year growth — and that more than 850,000 new devices are activated each day.

“With a year-on-year growth rate of more than 250 (percent), 850,000 new Android devices are activated each day, jetting the total number of Android devices around the world past 300 million. These numbers are a testament to the break-neck speed of innovation that defines the Android ecosystem,” Rubin wrote.

An intriguing additional statistic reported in the blog entry is the fact that there are more than 450,000 marketplace apps listed in the Google Android Market, up from 150,000 this time last year. And there are more than a billion app downloads every day. And there are more than 800 Android devices on the market, Rubin claims.

What does this have to do with TalkinCloud? Mobility is one of the cloud’s key value drivers. Just about every major SaaS vendor we talk about has some kind of mobility play, and most of those land on the Android Market. And just as I noted when that original momentum update was given in late 2011, Google’s spending a lot of effort making the Android platform more channel-friendly.

Apple might be launching a new iPad this year, but with Google Android theoretically powering a set of real-life Google Goggles, Android may soon be everywhere in ways we never would have expected.
