VMware Introduces vCloud Air Network Days Before VMworld 2014

Just days before VMworld 2014, VMware announced the rebranding of vCloud Hybrid Service to vCloud Air and the unveiling of vCloud Air Network. Here are the details.

Just a few days before VMworld 2014, VMware (VMW) has introduced a new network of partners and rebranded one of its services for its hybrid cloud computing customers.

The Palo Alto, California-based virtualization company on Thursday announced VMware vCloud Air Network, an expansion of the company's VMware Service Provider Program (VSPP) that connects customers to more than with more than 3,800 VMware-based cloud services providers (CSPs).

"The VMware vCloud Air Network represents another key element of our cloud strategy -- enabling customer choice and flexibility to find the ideal, local cloud service based on industry leading VMware technology," VMware Hybrid Cloud Services Executive Vice President and General Manager Bill Fathers said in a statement.

Featured providers are engineered on VMware vSphere and VMware vCloud Director, and provide multi-level security and a multitenant architecture.

In a company blog post, VMware Global Channel Partners Vice President Geoffrey Waters said service provider partners will benefit from new badge designations that enable partners to to their VMware service offerings. He also noted that partners will also be listed on the company's public portal.

VMware also rebranded VMware vCloud Hybrid Service to VMware vCloud Air. The company said the name change aims to further show its commitment to delivering value added as a service solution to customers on its hybrid cloud platform.

"The platform itself, built on VMware vSphere, will remain the same secure, IaaS hybrid cloud it has always been," Waters said.

The news comes on the heels of VMware's acquisition of CloudVolumes, a Santa Clara, California-based real-time application delivery company. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

More than 22,000 people are expected to attend VMworld 2014 next week to find out what VMware has planned for software-defined data centers, hybrid cloud computing and end-user computing.
