EMC CEO Explains Software Designed Data Center

EMC (NYSE: EMC) and VMware (NYSE: VMW) are marching toward the software-defined data center for private clouds and public clouds. But what exactly will that march involve? EMC CEO Joe Tucci offered perspectives during Oracle OpenWorld 2012.

First, Tucci said cloud data centers have to have three core components:

  • Standardized hardware, such as high-volume x86 servers
  • A virtualized infrastructure
  • Integrated automation tools, rather than bolt-on solutions

He predicted that partners and customers will be able to provision applications in minutes, seconds and even sub-seconds (see FastChat Video, from The VAR Guy's sister site Talkin' Cloud).

In a related move, VMware earlier this year acquired Nicira, which specializes in software-defined networking. Tucci yesterday also pointing to continued work between EMC, VMware and Cisco Systems; the three companies promote VCE, which promotes integrated VBlock solutions to channel partners and customers.
