Cloud Backup: Mozy Enhances Reseller-Focused Server Tool

Mozy-Data-Shuttle

Cloud storage provider Mozy, a fully owned subsidiary of the EMC Corp., has launched an upgrade to the MozyPro server backup tool that lets it handle larger filesets and boost speed — by taking advantage of the speed of mail.

To be more specific, Mozy’s press release hypes MozyPro’s newfound 100-fold acceleration when scanning large file sets. But that’s just on the baked-in technology end.

Mozy is simultaneously introducing the Mozy Data Shuttle, which helps take large chunks of customer data from the on-premises server off to the cloud for an additional performance boost. How? Much like cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services operate, customers literally mail Mozy a (provided) backup appliance overnight, which it onboards to the cloud rapidly thereafter.

MozyPro also is upping its security game to meet the new challenges presented by the Mozy Data Shuttle — the software now “double-encrypts the dataset with a Mozy-generated key or a personal key and a one-time-use Data Shuttle key (for added security)” before it goes off to the cloud. And after the appliance is used, Mozy scrubs it as clean as possible, eliminating the possibility that a customer’s data will leak.

MozyPro is aimed at helping SMBs and larger businesses move terabytes of data to the cloud affordably and easily. And, according to Mozy, MozyPro only uploads files that have changed from its initial “seed” backup, further enhancing speed and performance.

MozyPro is only available through the IT reseller channel, with pricing for the Mozy Data Shuttle determined by the amount of data to be, well, shuttled. Something that remains unclear is whether the MozyPro upgrades apply to Intermedia Online Backup customers, which is powered by Mozy’s platform, but I’ll update as soon as I get an answer.
