The goal of image-based backup has evolved from capturing the entire picture of a system to protecting business environments from downtime.

Brian Mandell, product manager at Datto, Norwalk, Connecticut-based data backup and disaster recovery (BDR) technology provider, told MSPmentor in an interview that “with true image-based backup, you get a complete picture of the workstation or server at a point in time.”

“This is essential for restoration because rebuilding or virtualizing a machine requres not just files but also the applications and systems, as well,” he said.

While a full restore is possible with file-based backup, it often takes a lot longer to complete. An image-based backup solution can prevent downtime, and, in return, keep dollars in customer pockets. Image-based backup also enables MSPs to test out new solutions in customer environments.

“Additional advantages of image-based backup include fast full restores, file-level recovery capabilities, bare-metal restore functionality, image verification and the ability to run entire remote offices.”

With the right solution, image-based backup doesn’t have to be expensive for SMBs. The right solution provides business continuity, local virtualization and offsite storage at an affordable monthly price.
